Hypertufa was developed in the 1930s to replicate stone troughs of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in England. Hypertufa is a lightweight,  durable and porous material.  There are hundreds of different recipes.  The most common one is using peat moss, portland cement, sand, and perlite.

The process

Hypertufa planters are made from my handmade mixture of peat moss, perlite, recycled shavings, bark, and cement.  Planters are hand pressed into molds and manipulated to the right thickness and design. They are then placed in plastic bags for 24 to 36 hours. Then they are ready to be carved, distressed, and detailed (the fun part). These lovely planters are placed back into double-sealed bags where they sit for up to 21 to 30 days - slowly curing for strength. During this curing process, they are periodically sprayed with water to make sure they do not dry too quickly. Finally, they come out of the bags and finish air-drying. The last stage is soaking them for a few days in water to allow the lime to leak out of them. This entire creative journey takes 4 to 5 weeks
